Leo Kelly, MHS, PA(ASCP)cm was recently honored in West Haven, Connecticut by the VA Medical Center for his 40 years of dedicated service to the VA Hospital.  Leo began his PA training (1971) as a pathologists’ assistant graduate from then Quinnipiac College with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973, and then completed his Master’s of Health Sciences in 1976.  He is well known throughout the AAPA and the pathology community particularly in the New England area for his many years (since 1973) as the Coordinator of the Quinnipiac University Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program, former AAPA President, past Secretary, Board of Trustees member, NAACLS volunteer, and longtime chair of the AAPA Administration Committee. Leo is best described by the late Raymond Yesner M.D., West Haven VA Director of Anatomic Pathology for many years, other pathologists, and innumerable PAs as having trained as “ the educator extraordinaire”.

Congratulations Leo and best wishes for this honor.  Thank you for helping to make the AAPA the professional association it is today.  -Posted 5/14/2012

At the Spring Meeting of the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC), Rae Rader, MPA, PA(ASCP)cm was elected chair of the Board of Governors (BOG), effective November 4, 2012. Rae has represented the AAPA on the BOG since 2004 when certification of PAs began. Rae has recently served as the vice chair of the BOG, chair of the Examination Oversight Committee, and is liaison to the PA Exam Committee. Rae will become the first PA to serve as chair of the BOG.

A graduate of the Downstate PA training program and a long standing member of the AAPA, Rae had previously served as AAPA President, Conference Committee Chair, and Board of Trustees member. She is currently an Adjunct member of the BOT. Rae joined the AAPA soon after graduation and began volunteering on the AAPA Conference Committee. She credits the collegiality and support of the AAPA leadership and the volunteer opportunities provided by the AAPA for her success.

The BOG is comprised of representatives from the BOC sponsoring and participating societies, which includes the AAPA. The BOG meets biannually to oversee the activities of the BOC, approve policy changes, make appointments to exam committees, and review examination statistics.  As chair, Rae will represent the BOC at various national meetings. The next BOG meeting will take place during the 2012 ASCP Annual Meeting in Boston (11/2-4/12).  As the oldest and largest certification agency for laboratory professionals, the BOC has certified more than 450,000 individuals since it was established and has become the gold standard for certification of clinical laboratory personnel. To date, there are 1561 ASCP certified PAs.  -Posted 5/14/2012

Notes from the BOT

As many of you know, creation of the AAPA / CAP Grossing Guideline (aka grossing manual) is beginning to take steps forward. It is very exciting to see how many volunteers have signed up to assist (around 90 at last count). Moreover, the level of expertise and experience among AAPA volunteers is outstanding.

I’m sure that when we couple our work with what assistance the College of American Pathologists can provide, the end result will be an excellent guideline. In addition, as AAPA members step into the role of content providers and experts, I’m excited about the possibility of these members helping to educate the rest of us – keeping us at the leading edge of cancer reporting requirements.

Best of luck, and sincere thanks to all of our Grossing Guideline volunteers! - Jon H. Wagner, BOT Chair
