CMP Fact or Fiction

The Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) and certification renewal have generated questions and concern from some of our members.  To address these issues the ASCP Board of Certification (formerly Board of Registry) has taken steps to streamline the renewal process (it’s all on-line now) and is dedicating additional customer service staff to field questions.

  • Fact - all certified PA’s are required to participate in CMP
  • Fact - PA’s are required to obtain 45 credits every three years
  • Fact - you must earn these credits in: 1-safety, 20-anatomic pathology, 24-anatomic pathology, management, education, other clinical specialties
  • Fact - you can view all educational credit options at https://www.ascp.org/content/board-of-certification/credential-maintenance-program-cmp
  • Fact - you can renew entirely on-line at  http://www.ascp.org/Board-of-Certification/Certification-Maintenance-Program-CMP
  • Fact - if you fail to renew your certification you will no longer be considered a certified PA and can no longer use the designation “PA(ASCP) or PA(ASCP)cm
  • Fact - You receive 15 free credits as part of your AAPA membership every year
  • Fact - you need to complete your renewal process 2 months before your expiration date
  • Fact - you do NOT need to send documentation of your education activities with your renewal
  • Fact - you can earn 2 credits per year by serving on an AAPA committee
  • Fact - you can earn 3 credits for presenting a poster at the annual conference
  • Fact - you can earn 3 credits per contact hour for preparing and presenting a new workshop or lecture
  • Fact - you can earn 1 credit per year as an on-site inspector for training program accreditation (NAACLS)
  • Fact - after you complete certification renewal you can use the designation "PA(ASCP)cm
  • Fact - you can earn a full year’s worth of credit at the AAPA Annual Conference
  • Fact - you receive 6 free online CEs when you renew your ASCP membership
  • Fiction - you can receive CE credit for taking the PA exam; that option is for people who are MLS/MLT or who have a categorical certification and take an advanced certification in their field

The AAPA is an approved provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences through the ASCLS PACE program.
