Happy 7th Annual Pathologists' Assistant Day!

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, April 15, 2020

Happy Pathologists’ Assistant Day!  On this special day, the Board of Trustees would like to take this opportunity to recognize each of you, our members, and the critical role you play in supporting pathologists to provide high quality patient care during this time.  We know everyone has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in our work and home lives.  Along with challenges at home, many have experienced changes or reduction in work hours, transition to work in other areas of the lab or hospital, or being overwhelmed by creating and implementing COVID-19 related procedures and policies, or by the extra volume of patients coming through the morgue in hard hit areas of the country.  While we as Pathologists’ Assistants are not on the front lines of patient care in the ER or the ICU, our expertise and the critical role we play in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology are essential for pathologists to render a diagnosis and provide pathology services, whether they’re working on-site or working remotely.  As PAs, our ability to innovate and contribute in a variety of areas while facing increased risk to our health is remarkable.

During this unprecedented time when many of us are feeling isolated and concerned about our livelihood, the AAPA has used this opportunity to feature the faces and stories of our members in our new "PAs Navigating COVID-19" series.  Please continue to watch for these emails as it is both uplifting and comforting to know what others are experiencing and how they are adjusting to these challenging times.  We’d love for you to contribute to our PA community by sharing your story and/or a helpful link for our COVID-19 resources list.  Remember that we’re all in this together, and that the AAPA and our community of PAs are strengthened by each and every one of you as contributing members.

During this time, the AAPA has taken action to support our Fellow and Student members:

  • Created a COVID-19 resources list.  Members of the Education and MarComm Committees contributed valuable reference links.  Please use this list in your work; we’d love to hear from you with suggested additions by sending them to info@pathassist.org.
  • Provided all student members complimentary access to past conference lecture recordings to support PA students while clinical rotations are suspended.
  • Offered half-priced conference lecture recordings to all who registered for the Spring Meeting.  With being forced to cancel the Spring Meeting, the AAPA provided a continuing education alternative so registrants could still earn the credits they needed, along with a full meeting refund.
  • The AAPA continues to offer the 20 CE credits included with your annual membership right on schedule, including the first recorded webinar and quiz: Colorectal Surgical Margins by Sarah Garner.

We are hopeful that the pandemic fades away in short time, and that we are all able to ease back into our usual routines at home and at work.  Until then, be well, stay safe, and Happy Pathologists’ Assistant Day!

On behalf of the AAPA Board of Trustees,

John Eckman, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM
Chair, Board of Trustees
