Abigail Skerritt-Jones, PA(ASCP)CM
AAPA member since 2011

"I have been a member of the AAPA since 2011 as a student when I wrote and won the AAPA student scholarship essay award.  I also designed and presented a triplet placenta with pathology silicone model, which was displayed at the AAPA Fall Conference.  In the last seven years and 17/k specimens per year, I have been constantly amazed that there is never a dull day as things are constantly changing in our field and department.  Over the years, I have enjoyed teaching high school children about pathology in their yearly scrub camp, mentoring college students, training medical students, and I have even convinced two medical students to convert to pathology internships while they shadowed me for their one month elective rotation.  I also present gross photos at tumor board.

Last year I wrote an article for the hospital’s online newsletter called “Your specimen’s journey”, to help a patient understand the path of their specimen from surgery to pathology.  In the fall, I displayed a pathology booth at a Fall Health Festival with animal organs, gross photos, pathology slides with a microscope, and potato specimens to ink and section and put into cassettes.  I have also had a pathology booth at our hospital’s talent show.

My short term goal is to produce another article for the hospital newsletters, and, one day, to present a lecture at one of our AAPA conferences."
