The changes contained in the 8th edition of the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) Cancer Staging Manual took effect on January 1, 2018. Since cancer staging is at the center of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Cancer Protocols, the new staging manual meant updating every CAP Cancer Protocol. This massive body of work by AJCC and CAP required a similar effort on our part as the Grossing Guideline protocols are harmonized to the CAP Cancer Protocols and the new TNM staging criteria.
We are tremendously indebted to the AAPA authors, AAPA editors, CAP pathologist expert reviewers, and support staff at the AAPA Central Office who devoted themselves to the work on the 2nd edition Grossing Guidelines. The protocols referenced above are complete and have been uploaded to the AAPA website. The remainder of the protocols are in the final stages of review by CAP experts, and we anticipate posting all protocols, fully aligned with AJCC and CAP updates within the next month or two.
