Below, AAPA Founding Father and Membership Committee member Coy Wagoner, PA(ASCP)CM, shares his perspective on why he maintains his membership in the AAPA.

“The Pathologists’ Assistant profession and the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) have changed my entire life. I was working in the coal mines to make money to pay my college tuition. I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the first three PA students in the very first program at Duke University. I was paid a stipend in the program, and I also met my future wife there. Upon completion of the program, the graduates realized the importance of keeping in touch, even though we would end up being scattered across the country in pursuit of our careers. Being one of the founding fathers of our organization, we incorporated and tried to discover the legal hurdles that existed, as we were a new profession in the medical field. Yearly meetings, prior to the internet, enabled us to network face-to-face. We could advise each other on the pitfalls of the job, salaries, expected workloads, working hours/call, and possible open positions. With our current website, I have made friends for life, from Florida to Seattle to Toronto, within our organization. Our annual AAPA conferences have allowed me to learn new things, which keeps me current in the evolution of my profession. Difficult cases and situations are presented with solutions and recommendations. I can definitely say, my life would be quite different without the support and education that I have received from the AAPA in my role as a pathologists’ assistant since 1970. For these reasons, I continue to renew my membership and choose to volunteer on the membership committee to pay it forward.”
