Abstract: Many working on the surgical bench receive cardiac explants, some of which have complex congenital heart disease.  These specimens can present in both the pediatric and adult populations, with many of the adult patients having had previous surgical repairs prior to transplant.  A basic discussion including the ‘Morphologic Method’ and ‘Sequential Segmental Analysis’ will provide the basics for adequate examination and preservation of these complex congenital cardiac defects.  Diagnosis does not have to be hard, with some tips and tricks presented along with some sectioning techniques.  Actual cardiac explants will be used, and hands-on time will be provided.

Instruction Level: Intermediate - Refresher course; some basic knowledge required

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:

1. Develop techniques to recognize the specific morphologic characteristics of each segment of the heart, enabling them to identify abnormal or absent connections.
2. Participate in hands-on activities that will facilitate identification of certain anatomic structures, which will aid in proper dissection and diagnostic assessment of these complex specimens.
3. Learn sectioning techniques to preserve the complex anatomy of cardiac explants.

Important Continuing Education (CE) Credit Information: The AAPA is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS PACE^TM Program.

Workshop participants can earn up to 3 General AP Continuing Education credits.

San Diego, Let's Go!

Leading up to the AAPA Summer Meeting, we will be sharing some tips for family-friendly fun and must-visit destinations in San Diego, CA!  Today, we're featuring the Gaslamp Quarter itself, home to our host hotel!  This district is not only the heart but also the soul of downtown San Diego.  There are restaurants to suit every taste (even those of picky eaters you may be bringing along!).  Looking for some live – and lively – entertainment?  Head to one of the many theaters, music venues, or comedy clubs in the area.  Maybe you want to shop 'til you drop (or at least pick up a few souvenirs for family or friends); either way, you can find great shops nearby.  Of course, you can always stick close to the host hotel, which is full of first-rate amenities*, including a rooftop pool and lounge, cabana rentals, fitness center, and more.  Or, take a brisk 10-15 minute walk westward to experience a cool breeze from the San Diego Bay!

San Diego, Let's Go!

Leading up to the AAPA Summer Meeting, we will be sharing some tips for family-friendly fun and must-visit destinations in San Diego, CA!   Next up is Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres and just a five-minute walk from the host hotel.  According to mlb.com, "Petco Park is spectacular in every way, combining the best sight lines in baseball with breathtaking views of San Diego. The AAPA 49th Annual Conference: Hot Topics in Pathology Keynote Speaker is coming in hot!

Hello AAPA Members,

Are you planning to attend an AAPA meeting or conference in 2025?  Have you ever thought about presenting an interesting, relevant lecture to the group?  As we work toward developing our speaker lineup for these meetings, we would like to invite all AAPA Fellow members to consider presenting a lecture.  Lectures may cover virtually any topic in pathology or a pathology-related field, including breast, colon, heart, lung, liver, brain, autopsy, forensics, histology, molecular pathology, immunohistochemistry, safety, ethics, or a multi-disciplinary approach – these are just a few of the many areas that may be considered.

We would like to especially encourage the presentation of new and emerging techniques, methodologies, or protocols.  Please consider sharing your knowledge and experience with your peers!  In addition to an honorarium for presenting, you can earn up to 3 CMP points for research and preparation of a presentation or workshop for the first time, as well as enjoying the overall experience of being able to present to your peers.

Alternatively, if you have colleagues who you think would be a good fit to present at an AAPA meeting or conference, please share your recommendations with us.

Ready for some fun in Chicago?

Join us for the AAPA Spring Meeting, March 18-20!

The AAPA Spring Meeting in Chicago, Illinois is just a couple weeks away, and we are so excited to get together for some amazing PA-specific education!  (Haven't registered yet?  There is still space available, but you have to register by Monday, March 11th!)

While the Spring Meeting is mainly focused on our excellent education offerings, we also encourage you to make time to enjoy all that the Chicago area has to offer.  Since the weather in Chicago can be a bit unpredictable as the season transitions from winter to spring, we wanted to give you some fun ideas to plan for any contingency.  Be sure to leave room for these activities in your itinerary:

• Stroll through the city's many museums: Chicago is home to some of the country's best museums, including The Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, and the Chicago Sports Museum.  Many are even within walking distance of the host hotel (the Museum of Ice Cream is just a 6-minute walk away)!  On a budget?  There are also a ton of free museums to check out!

• Take an architecture tour: Bask in the beauty of the city's buildings – architecture tours are a no-brainer!  Weather permitting, hop aboard a river cruise or sign up for a walking tour to take in some of Chicago's most legendary landmarks!  There are even different length tours (in case you want to sneak out during lunch; we won't mind).

• Shop along Magnificent Mile: If the weather outside isn't exactly cooperating, pop inside for some retail therapy!  Just a few blocks west of the host hotel is Michigan Ave., commonly called Magnificent Mile, which is known for its upscale shops and restaurants.  C'est magnifique!

• Explore the Pedway: Don't let rain or snow stop you from getting out and about!  South of the river is the Chicago Pedway, a network of tunnels, ground-level concourses, and bridges in Chicago that connects skyscrapers, retail stores, hotels, and train stations throughout the central business district.  Spanning more than 40 downtown blocks, it contains shops, restaurants, and public art and helps pedestrians traverse the city in inclement weather.

• Experience Chicagohenge: Have you heard of the phenomenon that is Chicagohenge?  Due to the city's street-level grid system, twice a year (at the spring and autumn equinoxes) the sun aligns perfectly with east-west streets, creating the "Chicagohenge" effect.  If you're in town for the Spring Meeting, it'll be prime time to witness this unique spectacle!

• *BONUS* See the Chicago River turn green: If you arrive a few days before the meeting starts, you can catch the city's annual tradition of dyeing the Chicago River green in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  The event will take place on Saturday, March 16th, followed by a parade.  Don't miss this, or you'll be ~green~ with envy!
