Dear AAPA Members,

As the year winds down, we would like to say a big thank you to all our dedicated members and volunteers who put so much time into making this association a success.  Every year brings new opportunities and challenges as we work to continue providing pathologists’ assistants with relevant continuing education, networking opportunities, and professional development offerings.  Please take the time to renew your AAPA membership, and consider some of the amazing accomplishments this organization has made this past year and the benefits you receive both personally and professionally as a result.

How We’ve Supported Our Members’ Education and Development:

• Provided high quality, PA-targeted CE opportunities
  
• Offered 20 free CE credits per year to members to fulfill the 60-credit recertification requirement over the course of three years (including Advanced AP, Ethics, and Safety credits)
  
• Made automatic transfer of all AAPA-earned credits to the ASCP BOC available for Fellows for easier CMP (for Fellow members only; opt-in required)
• Developed an Inspection Readiness Kit – included with membership!
• Held our annual Summer Meeting in conjunction with a Pathologists' Assistant Training Program
  
• Offered in-person Spring Meeting attendance
  
• Introduced a variety of Special Interest Groups to further professional development and cater to members in various settings and stages of their career
• Explored Learning Management System options as we work toward offering improved CE delivery and future release of the AAPA Preceptor Program

• Awarded Travel Grants and Scholarships throughout the year
  

How We’ve Represented Our Members and Our Profession to Others:

• Completed and published all protocols from the 3rd edition of the AAPA Macroscopic Examination Guidelines: Utilization of the CAP Cancer Protocols at the Surgical Gross Bench (Grossing Guidelines)
  
• Continued raising the visibility of PAs through our collaborative efforts and growing network, including adding a CAP Autopsy Committee representative
  
• Promoted the profession with our exhibit booth traveling to USCAP, APC, CAP, and NAME meetings this year

Forensic Toxicology Basics

This webinar is the third and final session of a three-part Forensics webinar series presented throughout the year.  Watch Part 1 and Part 2.

Abstract:
Pathologists’ assistants have been increasingly employed in medical examiner offices nationwide where their scope of responsibilities may involve preparation and submission of forensic toxicology specimens during an autopsy.  This session serves as an introduction to basic forensic toxicology principles and practices, and will outline the roles PAs play in specimen collection and the preliminary interpretation of results within medical examiner and/or coroner offices.

Instruction Level:
Basic - Entry level; no prior knowledge of subject necessary

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:

1. Understand the role of toxicology in medicolegal death investigation.
   
2. Outline the role of the pathologists’ assistant in specimen collection procedures and the preliminary screening of toxicology results.
   
3. Discuss the interpretation of postmortem toxicology results including general limitations.
   
4. Describe major drug classifications and analytes implicated in forensic cases.

2024 Issue 3 of The Cutting Edge

We are pleased to bring you the next issue of THE CUTTING EDGE!  This issue packs in some great content as always.  Our two CE manuscripts both fall into the Advanced Pathology category and are interesting cancer cases.  The cover manuscript, written by Cassandra Schmutz, MS, PA(ASCP)^CM, is a 2024 Fellow Travel Grant winner and features a rare location for osteosarcoma in the jaw.  The 2023 Student Non-Delegate Travel Grant winner, Salem Sullivan, wrote our second CE manuscript regarding a pleomorphic sarcoma in the breast.  Our third peer-reviewed manuscript, submitted by fellow member Olivia Josephsen, MS, MHS, PA(ASCP), features a rare complication of sickle cell disease: plastic bronchitis, which obstructs the airways and, in this instance, was the cause of death in a five-year-old boy.

Apply Now for an AAPA Fellow Travel Grant!

The purpose of this call for manuscripts is to receive contributions reporting on cases or techniques that would enhance the knowledge of the pathologists' assistant at the anatomic pathology bench or at autopsy for Fellow scholarship.

We will be awarding a travel grant to the top manuscript in each of two categories (Malignant Cases and Non-Malignant Cases).  The two winning entries (one in each category) will receive a travel grant valued at up to $2,000 (registration to an upcoming Annual Conference, Spring Meeting, or Summer Meeting within the next two years + $1,000 to assist with travel expenses).

Hello AAPA Members,

The Education Committee has dedicated immense time and energy to developing the Preceptor Program, a new initiative aimed at enhancing our roles as educators.  Now, we need your help to bring this program to life!

Who We’re Looking For:
We're seeking anyone with a passion for creativity, dedication to teaching, and a desire to share their expertise in pathology with PA students and residents.  Whether you’re a seasoned PA with years of teaching experience or a new graduate navigating the learner/teacher relationship, your contribution is invaluable.  The primary work will involve loading and redesigning existing content into our new LMS, with the goal of creating an interactive and engaging user experience for the Preceptor Program.

When:
We aim to have the content loaded between September and December 2024, with ongoing maintenance, updates, and new releases periodically thereafter.

What is the Preceptor Program?
The Preceptor Program is an educational initiative designed to support one of the core roles of Pathologists’ Assistants: teaching and training peers and support staff.  The program covers a range of topics, including how to provide meaningful feedback, teach grossing using various learning styles, and prevent educator burnout.  Each lesson is grounded in the latest scientific, psychological, and educational research, with examples directly applicable to teaching in a gross lab.

The program is divided into five sections:

• Overview led by Alexis Snyder, MHS, PA(ASCP)^CM – This section covers terminology, background information, and foundational knowledge to help PAs become excellent clinical preceptors and teachers.
• Intro Month led by Kaysi Lyall, MS, PA(ASCP)^CM – This section focuses on making the first month for PA students and residents less daunting and more successful.
• Learning Theories led by Christina Narakorn, MHS, PA(ASCP)^CM, and Michael Gellner, MHS, PA(ASCP)^CM – This section explores different learning and teaching styles to find the right approach for each situation.
• Behavioral led by Victoria Montoya, DHSc, MPS, MS, PA(ASCP), CPTD – This section emphasizes successful communication and feedback strategies.
• Interprofessional led by James Boley, MHS, PA(ASCP)^CM – This section addresses teaching other medical professionals and educating outside the lab.

Whether you lecture residents, precept for a Pathologists’ Assistant program, train new hires, guide surgical pathology techs, collaborate with OR staff, or simply explain your role to curious family and friends, you are an educator.  Many of us have learned these skills on the job, which can place us at a disadvantage.  This program is an opportunity to develop a resource that strengthens us as professionals and equips us with the tools to excel in our teaching roles.

During this webinar, presenters will discuss topics including cardiac conduction system dissection, normal fetal cardiac anatomy, and pulmonary embolism with relation to autopsy pathology.

At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:

1. Know when it would be appropriate to sample the atrioventricular node. 
   
2. Know the anatomical landmarks of the atrioventricular node of the heart. 
   
3. Identify the normal changes in the anatomy of the heart during early gestation and be able to apply this knowledge to their day-to-day practice. 
   
4. Identify the normal morphologic characteristics of the three segments of the heart, which are the atriums, ventricles, and arterial trunks. 
   
5. Describe what an embolism is. 
   
6. Decide which dissection method to use based on a decedent’s clinical history. 
   
7. List the steps for a pulmonary embolism dissection.

Hello AAPA Fellow Members,

Are you interested in contributing to the AAPA Grossing Guidelines in a unique way, but perhaps not as a section author or content creator?  Do you have experience in art or design?  Are you eager to learn more about the creation of medical illustrations and photographs, and the integration of design elements into the Guidelines?

If so, consider applying for the volunteer position of Grossing Guidelines Design Project Coordinator!

Duties and Responsibilities:
Partner with the Art Director in the production, oversight, and incorporation of digital medical illustrations, photographs, and layout/design (design elements) for the Grossing Guidelines.

Interact with the Art Director, Photograph Curator, authors, certified medical illustrators, Executive Director, Communications Director, editorial team, and Project Managers in the maintenance and updating of the Grossing Guidelines design elements.

Desired Expertise:

• Fellow AAPA member
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
• Art/Design background is preferred
• Reliable and efficient
• Ability to oversee various aspects of the production of high-quality guidelines in accordance with the standards established by the CAP and our editorial team
• Experience with Basecamp Project Management software preferred, but not required
• Excellent communication skills and eagerness to learn!

Time Commitment:
Highly variable; 2-5 hours a week when design elements are in the production/editing phase

Abstract:
What are the PA leadership roles and how does one make the transition?  As PAs, oftentimes we are thrust into a managerial-leadership role within the laboratory.  This may be by choice or as continued pressure from healthcare reimbursements due to limited staffing.  Management or leadership – just like healthcare – continues to evolve with ever-increasing demands, yet, at the heart, the key concepts are ever-present.  How does a leader face the day-to-day pressures, all while maintaining the quality of the services that are required for pathology diagnostics?  This can only be accomplished by acquiring the right skills and surrounding yourself with high performers that excel as a collective team.  In this webinar, we will cover how to prepare and make that transition with confidence.  This will include some skills that can help facilitate your success as a supervisor, manager, or executive director.  This will be an interactive session with several discussion breaks as we review each level of leadership.

Instruction Level:
Basic - Entry level; no prior knowledge of subject necessary

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:

1. Define different levels of leadership in the PA profession including Lead PA, PA Supervisor, PA-AP Manager, and Executive Director by outlining education and experience requirements and the scope of responsibilities that can be expected for each role.
   
2. Understand how to navigate the leadership ladder within your organization by managing expectations and successfully transitioning from one level to another.
   
3. Identify differences between management and leadership.
